What is a Vehicle Smog Test?

Because of the amount of pollutants, which have entered the environment in the past, state governments are becoming more aware of a need to create laws, which will lower air pollutants and emissions. One area in which the pollutants become a big concern is vehicles. Every motorized vehicle, be it car, truck, SUV or motorcycle, emits a certain amount of pollutants, also known as smog.

In some parts of the country, especially in highly urbanized areas, this smog has lead to many problems with the air quality. This can affect environmental health as well as the health of human beings as they breathe in the polluted air.

One way to cut down on the amount of smog that is created from vehicles is to require a smog test. Since the laws vary from state to state, one should find out what is required in their state of residence. Some states require that all vehicles pass a test annually, while other states put rules on which vehicles must be tested and when.

A vehicle smog test is quite simple. With a specialized machine, licensed technicians can attach the tool to the vehicle’s muffler and they run a test. This test will tell how much pollutants are being released by the vehicle, and it can even tell what kind of pollutants is being emitted.

If a vehicle passes the test, then no other action is required. However, if a vehicle fails the test, this means that it is emitting more smog than is illegally allowed. The owner of the vehicle will have to order repairs. Generally, these repairs are minor and they do not cost an inordinate amount of money. Once the repairs have been made, the vehicles will be re-tested and given a passing grade.

Not all states require this type of vehicle test, and some states have varying amounts of leniency. Some states require that a smog test be performed anytime a vehicle is sold. Some very strict states even require that the test be run on every vehicle bi-annually.

In order to make sure you are following the law, you will need to find out your state’s rules on vehicle emissions. Your state may not have laws, but if they do, you will be required to follow them. This is a way in which the amount of pollutants being released in the air can be limited someone. It is better for the health of people and of the earth.
